Shortness Of Breath: I Need A Doctor

Shortness of breath can be defined as an uncomfortable condition in which it is difficult for the lungs to inhale a proper amount of air. Any damage to your lungs or heart can cause breathing problems.

This problem can occur after exercise or after climbing stairs. Anxiety can also cause shortness of breath. It can be a sign of a serious lung or heart problem. Now the question arises that when is shortness of breath evidence of a severe problem? If you have a severe illness, and you are not treating it correctly, the outcome can be hazardous. That’s why you should immediately consult your doctor. You will come to know about the severity of this problem.

When to Call a Doctor

If the breath shortness does not allow you to perform your daily activities, this reason is enough to consult your doctor. But sometimes, this problem is accompanied by various other symptoms also. Call a doctor if you have the following symptoms along with shortness of breath(S.O.B):

  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Fast, fluttering heartbeats
  • Chills
  • Wheezing
  • Swelling in your feet

Tests to diagnose S.O.B

When you consult your doctor, he will ask you some questions about your medical history. After examining you, he will order a few tests to find the cause of this problem. These tests include:

1.  Oxygen Test

This test is done to see the level of oxygen in your blood. The radiologist places a sensor on your finger. This sensor uses light to detect oxygen. Except for the pressure of the sensor, you would not feel anything.

2.  Chest X-Ray

It helps in identifying pneumonia or other lung and heart problems. This is an easy and cheap technique. It can be performed in about 15 minutes.

3.Electrocardiography

This is another useful test to find the cause of S.O.B. The technician attaches small electrodes to your chest. A machine measures the electrical activity of your heart. This test shows any impairment in the blood flow to your heart.

Treatment For Shortness Of Breath(S.O.B)

Breath shortness can be overcome by various factors. It depends upon its cause. The most effective treatments are given below:

1.  Stop Smoking

Smoking is the leading cause of breathing problems. Quitting smoking will slow the progression of this disease. It prevents further complications and damage to your lungs.

2.  Sleeping In A Relaxed Position

Try to lie on your side, having pillows between your legs. Keep your head elevated by a pillow. Or lie on your back with your knees bent by having a pillow between them. Both of these positions relax the airways making breathing easier.

3.  Drinking Coffee

Research has shown that caffeine relaxes the muscles in the airways. As a result, it improves the inhaling ability of lungs. Drinking coffee is a successful method to reduce S.O.B.

4. Avoid Exposure To Pollutants

Regular exposure to pollutants increases breathing problems. Avoid breathing environmental toxins and allergens. Toxins damage your lungs, which can cause S.O.B.
